Humans of NovUM

“Student representation is a great way to get involved at your faculty and be able to make a change for your fellow students as well as for yourself”

Dear NovUMers! This week we have another member sharing their story of their time spent with NovUM. Without further ado, Michelle van Holten

Hi there! My name is Michelle van Holten. I am 24 years old and I’m from The Netherlands. I’m am member of the FHML Faculty Council. In my past time I like to be musically involved and I have a love for cinematography.

I am a third year ba BMS student and a second year ba Medical student. After finishing both bachelors I will continue on doing the master of Medicine at the FHML. After that I’d like to be a medical specialist or get a PhD first.

I’ve been with NovUM for a year now. Before becoming a Faculty Council member I was a student representative at the HLS Student Council. After three years there I decided to run for the FHML faculty Council. I started checking out the different parties and felt most at home at NovUM due to their high international awareness and look on a green future.

Student representation is a great way to get involved at your faculty and be able to make a change for your fellow students as well as for yourself. Loads of people just complain, but by becoming a student representative you are granted the tools to actually make a change.

Great memories of NovUM include elections week. I remember everyone being very much involved and our seniors really guiding us throughout the entire week. NovUM is basically one big family. After an election day we would gather in the park for drinks and would discuss how everyone’s doing.

After-assembly drinks are quite memorable too. As students of different faculties gather at NovUM, these drinks are always filled with enlightenment regarding the diverse topics our members work on in their studies or in their personal lives. As a medical student it’s very interesting to hear about finances from SBE students and about several historical topics from the Fasos students for instance.
